  • Paper Topics:
    NB: Submit papers 1-4 as a MS-Word file via the course's Blackboard/Vista site. All five papers must be based on the course readings and class discussion. All papers must be typed in Times New Roman font at 12 point and be double-spaced with 1.25 margins. Punctuation, style, footnotes, etc., will be according to Kate L. Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. A full letter grade will be deducted for every day a paper is late. If you have any questions concerning the essays or would like me to look it over before they are due, arrange a time to meet with me.
  • PAPER #1(due 2.3.2009): 2-3 pages in length--Explain how (1) ancient texts; (2) forced labor arrangements in feudal Europe; and (3) religious doctrine may have shaped white attitudes towards Africans and contributed to the development of "race-based" slavery at the dawn of the early modern period.


  • PAPER #2 (due 2.15.2009): Explain the ways in which the institution of slavery evolved in Anglo America during the seventeenth century. Your paper should (1) describe where slave societies took root (and why); (2) describe and account for changing attitudes among English colonists; and (3) highlight any continuities or striking differences between Old World forced labor (from antiquity to the early modern period) and slavery in the Americas.
