Here are some of the courses that I teach. All of these courses meet degree requirements for general education in the fine arts, as well as the BA in fine arts, humanities and interdisciplinary studies major requirements.

You do not have to create works of art in these classes. These are history of art courses. You will study cultural history and the history of ideas by looking at well-known art works from different historical periods. You will also learn how art historians interpret works of art.

ART 1301: History of Art Paleolithic to Renaissance

Prerequisite: Credit or enrollment in ENG 1301.
An introduction to monuments of art from prehistoric times to c. 1500 AD. The course analyzes the variety of contexts and circumstances under which works of art were created, and explores both the similarities and differences between artistic periods.

ART 1302: History of Art Renaissance to the Present

which works of art were created, and explores both the similarities and differences
between artistic periods.

ART 3301/HUM 3312: Major Developments in the History of Art
A study of important historical events in the development of the theory and practice of the visual arts.

AMERICAN ART

This course surveys the art of America from colonial times to the present day.  Traditional architecture, sculpture, and painting will be the focus of the class, but decorative art, folk art and other types of art objects will also be studied.  Students will learn about the major monuments of American art history as well as the names of notable American artists, and will interpret art works within the context in which they were produced.  They will also visit area museums and discuss the art that they see within the framework of the class.

ART 3302/HUM 3324: History of Modern Art

Prerequisite: ENG 1301 and 3 hours of art history or
art appreciation.
A survey of world art from the Revolutionary Period (late 18th century) to contemporary times, including such artistic movements as Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism and Pop Art.
