Students mostly look at painting and sculpture, but also other media including printmaking, photography, film, video and architecture. While the class emphasizes Western art, students also study non-Western cultures including China, Japan, Africa, Latin America and Native America at area museums. Students are not required to make art works in this class.

Grading: click for Grade Worksheet

Students' grades are based on the number of points that they earn. A student earns points by attending class, and by successfully completing five quizzes, four tests, two exams, and two museum assignments. No term papers or other written assignments are required.

Attendance (280 points, 10 points per day, excluding museum days and two sick/emergency days as needed by the student. Students earn 20 bonus points for perfect attendance for a total of 300)

The quality of experience for those students who attend regularly is higher than that of those who do not. Points earned for attendance reflect that qualitative difference. Students who attend regularly typically are more successful on tests and exams.

Quizzes (5 out of 11, 3 chosen by professor, 2 by the student, 10 points each, 50 points total):

Quizzes test the student's ability to identify works of art from the textbook. Required images are listed in this syllabus. Students identify works of art by title and period style. A spelling sheet with dates is provided. No make-ups for quizzes are given. The last two quizzes must be used as make-up quizzes for any missing quizzes.

Tests (100 points each, 400 total) and Exams (200 points each, 400 total):

Tests and exams are graded on the student's ability to recognize art works from the textbook and include identification of art works, multiple choice, and short answer/essay questions. No make-ups for tests are given. There is an extra fifth test scheduled for students who miss one. Students who take all five tests may use the points from the fifth test as bonus points up to 400 total test points.
Makeups for exams require a written excuse from an appropriate authority such as a doctor, counselor, or employer.

Museum assignments (50 points each, 100 total):

Museum assignments are completed at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Students must have their own transportation and be able to meet during class time at the museum. Students are asked to complete questionnaires, given by the professor in advance of the trips, about specific objects in the museum. Typically students are able to complete the assignments during the hour class visit to the museum.
