Students analyze the variety of contexts and circumstances under which works of art were created and explore both the relationships and differences between artistic periods. While the class emphasizes Western art, students also study non-Western cultures including ancient China, Japan, Africa, India and Mesoamerica at area museums. Students are not required to make art works in this class.

Grading: (click to see Grade Worksheet)
Students' grades are based on the number of points that they earn. A student earns points through attendance, by successfully completing 7 identification quizzes, at least three tests, two museum assignments and a final exam. No term papers or other written assignments are required.

Attendance (150 points, 10 points per day excluding museum days and one sick/emergency day)

Identification Quizzes (70 points; 11 given, 4 picked up by the professor for grading, 3 chosen by the student for grading; limit 7 quizzes total)
Quizzes test the student's ability to identify works of art from the textbook. Required images are listed in this syllabus. (Click here) Students identify works of art by title and period style. A spelling sheet with dates is provided. No make-ups for quizzes are given. The last two quizzes must be used as make-up quizzes for any missing quizzes.

Tests (4 given, 100 points each, 300 point maximum that may be earned)
Tests include identification as well as multiple choice and short answer questions based on class discussion and notes. NO MAKEUPS FOR TESTS ARE GIVEN!! There is a fourth test scheduled for those who miss one. Those taking all four tests may use the fourth to make up points from the earlier three.

Final Exam(100 points)
The final exam includes identification of art works, along with multiple choice and short answer/essay questions based on the four tests. A makeup for the final exam requires a documented excuse from an appropriate authority.

Museum assignments (100 points each, 200 total):

Museum assignments are completed at both the Menil Museum and at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Students must have their own transportation and be able to meet during class time at these museums. Students are asked to complete questionnaires, given by the professor in advance of the trips, about specific objects in the museums. Typically students are able to complete the assignments during the hour class visit to the museum.
